Keep white laundry bright without harsh bleach

Whites turn dull when body oils, mineral deposits from hard water, and mixed washes leave a film on fibres. Sorting is the cheapest fix: never wash white towels with dark jeans, even on a cold cycle.
Pre-treat collars and cuffs with a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water for thirty minutes before the main wash. For a boost, add half a cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment — it helps dissolve residue and does not leave a vinegar smell once dry.
Sunlight remains one of the best whiteners available in Northern Ireland summers. Hang shirts and bedding outside when UV is strong; turn coloured trims away from direct sun if you worry about fading. Avoid overloading the drum — clothes need room to agitate for detergent to work.
Persistent yellow underarms on older garments may need replacing rather than rescuing, but for day-to-day maintenance these steps keep bedding and work shirts presentable between professional home cleans.
